The climb to the Pico Veleta in Andalusia, Spain, traverses on La Carretera más alta d’Europe, the highest paved road in Europe. I’m faced with an agonizingly long 25-mile climb from Granada to an abandoned resort that is gasping for snow. Folded up on a small rental bike – too small, in fact – I find myself approaching the resort’s gate. Time is running out but there is no way back. In my mind this is the beginning of the absolute nothingness. A three-mile climb on a narrow road separates me from the summit at 10.000 feet. My throat is cut off and my legs are full of acid. The grand prize: an endless view of the Sierra Nevada.
