From Portland, Oregon Mount Hood seems like a majestic extinct volcano. It rises just behind the city. I focus eastward on the mountain, my bike and the rising sun. After almost 100 km flat, the scorching heat from the soil appears to increase, and melt the rubber off my tires. The white snow cone is reassuring. After an 8 km climb I can rest at the Timberline Lodge. During the Great Depression this lodge was built with materials extracted from the surrounding environment. In peace I quench my thirst, fill my belly and revel in the glory. Eat your heart out Jack Nicholson!
